I have a DSLR camera and wanted a small point-and-shoot one which I could carry easily with me specially when I go biking. Having controls like the aperture mode, shutter mode and manual mode was not of primary importance. If I wanted to be too creative I had my DSLR.
Reason for buying ZS7:
Seemed like the picture quality was good. The intelligent-Auto mode (as some reviewers said) was the best in the market. Zoom. Ability to use the zoom in the movie mode. The issue of blown out highlights was mentioned by many but I thought I will give it a shot and see for myself.
What I did not care about:
The video codec issue. I'm fine with the motion JPEG and don't think that I will even use the other option.
Now that I have the ZS7 what do I think:
Its a good camera. Now that I had one, I bought another one for a friend. The picture quality is good. It does blow out the highlights. If you feel like the noise is more when the ISO increases you can switch to the "P" mode and force the ISO to 80. If you feel that the highlights are being blown out, then in most situations you can decrease the EV value in the "P" mode and get better results. The reason I'm only mentioning the "P" mode is that mostly I was looking for a camera which does good in the auto mode and "P" mode as using the aperture/shutter/manual mode does not happen a lot of time and in particular after all its a "point and shoot" camera.
Judge for yourself:
Here is a brief review along with pictures, do remember that most pictures were taken in the "iA" mode (so the ISO is set by the camera) you can control several settings in other modes and get better results. But I wanted to just take pictures in the point-and-shoot mode and the "P" mode and show them.
