(More customer reviews)Bought this unit based off of my experience with previous Brunton products. I own the Solaris 52 folding solar panel as well as the predecessor to this device, the Solo 15. The Solo was a great pack, pushing out a tremendous ammount of juice in a 4 pound package. Well, at less than half the weight of the Solo 15 the Impel provides just as much of a punch with a series of new options that I feel blows the Solo 15 out of the water.
The Solo was all about convenient power in a transferable package, no bells and whistles, but it came packaged with a series of cables and connectors I felt detracted from the minimalist focus of the device. Things such as a DC converter for plugging in AC devices. The Impel does away with unnecessary components, and comes packaged with a DC cable and six adaptor heads that will plug into your desired power hungry device, and also has a 120V wall adaptor to charge your Impel from your home electricity outlets. Right on the face of the Impel is a USB connection port for all those USB charge capable devices, which is a very neat and convenient feature. Then there's the slider on the face of the Impel which lets you choose the voltage of the output post. You can select 12V 16V or 19V output....how cool is that? Obviously the battery will drain depending on the output you select, but Brunton has added another smart feature which will turn the output off once it senses that the device you are plugged into is fully charged.
I tried this feature out on a set of four energizer rechargeable batteries in the 15min charger. The batteries were fully drained, and at the 12V output selection I had a green light on the fully charged indicator well within the 15 min timeline and the Brunton Impel still showing a solid series of lights indicating it was still at 90-100% capacity. I have not tested it on a larger device such as a laptop, but based on this initial performance test i expect I can get at least two hours of runtime on my 19V Sony.
The Impel is packaged in a sleek rubberized housing which feels very sturdy. It is great little unit with some tremendous features that make it a stellar performer.
What I think is terrible is the lack of good informational write-ups here at Amazon or on Brunton's site. I had to dig around to find out the features, but I know the brand and trust their products so I was willing to expend the time looking around for information. The everyday consumer would not, so it's kinda disappointing to not see all these great features highlighted through product descriptions and gallery photos. When I get a moment I will upload some more photos here to show the accessories and the face of the power pack.
All in all I love the device and can't wait to take it out for a spin in the woods. I'd highly recommend this if you're looking for portable, reliable power for all your portable electronic needs.
