I had read the last reviewers post about difficult seeing things above 600x, but like the comments say underneath it, you have to use oil at 1500x.The lens piece actually says "OIL" on it so you don't get confused.
The 5 pack of slides was fine with it, and I also picked up a 25 pack as well to go with it.They all look great at even 1500x magnification. I've only done minimal experimentation with making my own slides (cheek scrape, blood, etc) and it's easy to do (You may need to get a few extra liquids to get the right contrast to your sample).
This scope is not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for when it comes to optics of any kind.The controls are really easy to use on it, it's easy to fine tune, changing slides is easy, and there's a nice hard stop so you never have to worry about sending your longest lens through a slide on accident ;)
