(More customer reviews)First of all: DO NOT COVER THE MICROPHONE WITH YOUR FINGER WHILE RECORDING VIDEOS, because LOUD CAMERA NOISE will be recorded in your movies, causing you to think the camera is defected. In fact, the closer you place your index finger to the microphone, the louder the camera noise can be heard in videos.
This is a GREAT LITTLE CAMERA! It has everything I need for general use and scuba diving: 24mm equivalent wide-angle, optical image stabilizer, 1080 30P HD video (recorded in 1440X1080 30p MP4 or 1920X1080 60i AVCHD), good low-light performance up to ISO 800, custom white balance for stills & videos, continuous auto focus & optical zooming in video, auto HDR, auto panorama, 3D, and an optional Ikelite underwater housing.
Stills: WX5 produces surprising good photos under low-light conditions, and the lens is very sharp at its widest setting, exhibiting very little chromatic aberration. Since RAW is not available, I'll mainly use "P" for shooting indoor and underwater so that I can set ISO, custom white balance, and not use flash at all. ISO 400 is very good. ISO 800 is useful when light gets really dim, but personally I won't use it much unless I absolutely have to.
Videos: WX5's Exmor R sensor produces noticeably better image quality than my Sony SR11 camcorder, and records videos that are "almost" as smooth. Since no fixed-lens consumer camcorder has 24mm-equivalent wide angle, WX5 is a better video camera for travel and underwater.
PC: Sony Picture Motion Browser play WX5's AVCHD videos under Windows XP as clearly and as smoothly as can be without showing any interlacing artifacts as if you're watching blu-ray movies on HDTV.
Mac: iMovie 09 transcodes AVCHD videos to Apple Intermediate Codec first, and iMovie 09 can also play WX5 videos without showing interlacing artifacts, but not nearly as smoothly as Sony PMB. BTW, QuickTime player is unable to deinterlace WX5 iMovie-transcoded videos so use iMovie instead.
Currently there are only three P&S cameras with 24mm lens and 1080 30p HD, and WX5 produces the best iSO 800 IQ, IMO! Overall I'm very happy with this new toy!
