(More customer reviews)I ordered this set a month ago and have had mixed experiences with it. Definitely not a "Pro" setup but will do as a quick, portable studio. I had a mixed experience with the vendor, CowboyStudio. I ordered the product rush shipping so I could use it for an upcoming shoot and they sent the backdrop but not the light kit. I was pretty livid! It had already been delayed in shipping by UPS so it was the day before the shoot before I received the backdrop only. I left voice mails and emails for them to call me asap but no one did so I called them. Luckily after explaining the situation to the Customer Service lady she agreed to ship them to me next day air Saturday delivery (with some coaxing). I did get the set in time for most of the shoot, but it really almost was a disaster.
The set itself is not the easiest to set up. It took two people about 30 minutes to get the softboxes set up, I had even watched a video on how to do this the night before and had read the instructions before starting. I leave them set up now, it's not worth the hassle to break them down and set them up again for each shoot. The build quality is not the best either, I really think that if I repeatedly took them apart and put them back together that they would disintegrate pretty quickly. If you're looking for something that is super easy and small to transport this is not the set for you.
All of the bulbs were intact and worked. The set has a switch for each bulb which is great for adjusting light intensity. One of the switches on one of the head units doesn't work and the light is stuck on, which is much better than it's stuck off so I doubt I'll go through the hassle of sending it back. I'll just cross my fingers that the other switches will continue to work as they should. The hinges that connect the light units to the stands are cheap plastic - one has already cracked under minimal use so I'll have to either repair it or replace it with something more sturdy.
The softboxes themselves do the job really well! The light they produce is bright but not blindingly so and the light is white, soft and large enough you can light a small group of people easily. Considering the quality of the rest of the kit I constantly knock on wood that these continue to operate well.
The stands (for both the lights and the backdrop) are not sturdy. They are flimsy and the adjustments are cheaply made and feel like they could break or slip without much pressure or weight. I don't even use the light stands for these lights as they are not strong enough to hold the weight reliably. Luckily I already have some great stands so this was not an issue for me, but could be for you.
The fabric backdrops are good, but again not anything impressive. They are thin and not very long, I had to buy additional fabric to use on the floor to extend the backdrop. You definitely would not want to backlight these and have them in focus as part of a portrait, they are not that attractive. These are meant to block out the mess behind the subject and give you a plain background. Again, the stands are flimsy and light and will fall over easily. I have knocked them over several times setting them up and taking them down. A couple of sandbag weights would fix this, but they of course are not included.
The included case is good, but again the zippers and such are plastic and will probably break eventually with regular use. It's big enough and rigid enough to protect the lights and such if you wanted to use it for short trips but I definitely would not consider it safe for rough use like on an airplane trip.
I would purchase the softbox portion of light set again as long as I could find different mounts that would work that weren't too expensive. The fabric does the job but it's not too impressive. The stands are not great and would probably look elsewhere for more substantial quality.
