(More customer reviews)I just got this a few weeks ago. I needed a tripod with a fluid head that could work with light weight cameras. I mainly use Canon's Vixia HF 200, which is about a pound. I spent a lot of time searching and researching and narrowed my options down to this product and the the Manfrotto 501 HDV with similar tripod. I needed a fluid pan head that could work with the light weight cameras and maybe work with the new DSLR's. I also own a Canon 7D and plan on expanding my business to use them exclusively. After reading peoples opinions and all the forms and customer reviews I decided to gamble on this one and I do not regret the decision.
The tripod is fairly light weight yet is still very rigid. It weighs about 4 pounds. There is NO spreader in between the legs to break or make the unit difficult to expand and collapse. Don't worry, once you extend the leg as far as or as little as you need, they are not moving. The legs are made of thick aluminum and have strong plastic locking clips for each tier of the telescoping legs to lock in place once extended. There is a bubble level on the top of the tripod to assist you with getting clean level shots. The head sits on top of a separate center post which extends and retracts smooth and easily after you loosen a thumb screw bolt and locks where you want it after you tighten the thumb bolt.
The 701 head is perfect for my application. I shoot video for Weddings and Corporate events. Currently I am using Canon's Vixia HF 200 camcorders, as well as one Canon 7D. They both work perfectly on the fluid head. Both panning and tilting are very smooth with just the right amount of drag. The tilt will return to zero for light weight cameras such as Canon's vixia line but did not have enough torque to reset my Canon 7D to zero level. The tilt and pan drag can be adjusted. The fluid panning is why I bought the head in the first place and I am completely happy with it and it works great for all my applications.
I strongly recommend this tripod and fluid head package. It is rigid, sturdy, and feels very smooth every time I pan, tilt, or both. The only thing I would caution is that this tripod head is only for cameras under 5-6 lbs.
